LESSON 1,3 &4

1.What is prayer?
Prayer is a form of communication, a way of talking to God.
The word pray comes from the Latin word precari, which simply means to entreat or ask.
And in praying, we strengthen that recognition of the presence of God, which draws us closer to Him. That is why the Church recommends that we pray frequently and make prayer an important part of our everyday lives.

2.Who is God?
GOD is unique, there are no other gods besides him (Isaiah 44:6) He who is from everlasting to everlasting. God is the fullness of being and of every perfection, without origin and without end. All creatures receive all that they are and have from Him. God is in heaven, on earth and in every thing and every place.

3. Why is God called the creator?
God is called the creator because he created everything out of nothing only by his word. ( Isaiah 43:1, Col1:16-17)
Heb 1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

Notice two points in this verse:
1. God created you. You are not an accident.
2. God has a plan for you. You have a purpose in life.
b) One purpose in life is to praise and worship God.
All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O lord; they will bring glory to your name. (Psalm 86:9)
I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. (Psalm 86:12)
c)You are created to know God If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)
d) One purpose in life is to grow in character.
The type of person you become is more important than your successes and failures in the world.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

6. What is a virtue?
It means having the fortitude to make right decisions in every area of life, regardless of opposition from outside influences.

By doing these things the prophets were really preparing the Jews for the coming of the Messiah, a name which means “the Anointed One.” In Greek the word for “Anointed One” is Christos, from which we get “Christ”.
Some prophets who obeyed GOD

Sin is disobedience to God’s commandments, either by doing what is forbidden or failing to do what is required.

 What is a venial sin?
Venial sins are slight sins. They do not break our friendship with God, although they injure it. They involve disobedience of the law of God in slight (venial) matters. Thus, not fully intending the action their guilt before God is reduced. It is always good to remember, especially those who are trying to be faithful but sometimes fall, that for mortal sin it must not only be 1) serious matter, but 2) the person must know it is serious and then 3) freely commit it.

 What is mortal sin?
Mortal sin is called mortal because it is the “spiritual” death of the soul (separation from God). However, by turning our hearts back to Him and receiving the Sacrament of Penance we are restored to His friendship. Catholics are not allowed to receive Communion if they have not confessed for their mortal sins.

How to keep away from sin?
 Be careful to fill your mind with God’s Word: Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
 Keep Your Mind Clean
Psalm 101:3 “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.”
 Doing good works:
Hebrews 10:24, 25 “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
 View Others with Godly Eyes
1 Timothy 5:1, 2 “Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.”
 Avoid Temptation
Romans 13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.”
What is God’s reward for your keeping away from sin?
James 1:12-15 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

LESSON 10: Preparing for the Savior
1. What is advent?
In the Catholic Church, Advent is a period of preparation, extending over four Sundays, before Christmas. The word Advent comes from the Latin advenio, “to come to,” and refers to the coming of Christ. This refers, first of all, to our celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas; but second, to the coming of Christ in our lives through grace and the Sacrament of Holy Communion; and finally, to His Second Coming at the end of time.

2. What does the prophecy say about the savior and about mother mary?
A most important prophet for Christians is Isaiah, who lived eight hundred years before the birth of Christ. More than the others, Isaiah spoke about the coming Messiah. Here are some of his prophecies about the Redeemer:

3. What is epiphany?
The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East.

4.What is advent wreath and candles?
The Advent wreath is likely the most popular tradition, and wreaths are typically present in both the parish church and in the home. It is a more recent tradition, with the modern Advent wreath emerging in Germany and spreading throughout Europe and beyond in the 1930’s.
The Jesse Tree is also a popular Advent tradition. A Jesse Tree, named for the father of David, is a tree that is decorated gradually throughout Advent with symbols or pictures of biblical persons associated with the gradual coming of the Messiah, Christ. This includes, among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Joseph and Mary.
Advent candles: During each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. Others consider the lighting of the first candle to symbolize expectation, while the second symbolizes hope, the third joy and the fourth purity. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day reminding Christians that Jesus is the light of the world.
Bible references :
The Messiah’s virgin mother: “The virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and him name shall be Immanuel (which means, God-with-us)” (Is 7:14)
The Messiah will be a great light: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom (sinfulness), a light has shone” (Is 9:1)
The Messiah will be a great ruler: “For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and for ever peaceful” (Is 9:5-6)
The Messiah shines in glory upon the people: “Rise up in splendor! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance” (Is 60:1, 3)
Comparison with new testament
 Luke 2:1-7, 2:21
 Matthew 2:4–6—The scribes knew that Bethlehem was the prophesied birthplace of the Messiah.
 Matthew 1:18–23—Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled.

St. Joseph is the guardian and foster father of Jesus, and Mary’s husband.(Mt.1:12-16)

2.What is called the domestic church?
A family is called a domestic church
3.Why we have to be obedient to our parents and elders?
We have to be obedient to our parents as Jesus was obedient to his parents.

 Why were Mary and Joseph so “worried” (Lk 2:48) about Jesus?
This worry of both Mary and Joseph is captured in what we call the “fifth Joyful mystery” of the rosary, the “Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple.” Jesus, the boy, was indeed both divine and human; and yet he had to grow, like you and me, in his humanity. As scripture puts it, he returned home to Nazareth with them, and “increased in wisdom”
We also need to take special note that Jesus lived under their “complete authority” (or, was “obedient to them” ) when he returned to Nazareth (v. 51). Jesus spent his spiritual childhood under the total care and protection of Mary and Joseph.
Reflection: What does that say to you and me? Are we ready to live under the authority and protection of Mary and Joseph? Have I ever consecrated myself, and my family, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary?

 PRAYER
Lord, help us to live like the Holy Family, united in respect and love. Teach us the sanctity of human love and the value of family life. Help us to live in peace with all. Help us to find you in the service of God as Mary and Joseph fond Jesus fulfilling his vocation in the temple.

There are three things the Holy Family can teach us about our own yes to God

 The Holy Family actively participated in their response to God’s invitation.
 The Holy Family’s yes to God was not just one time, but an ongoing yes.
 The Holy Family rooted their lives in God.

 In the NT Epistles, Peter identifies himself as “an apostle of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet 1:1; cf. 2 Pet 1:1).
o The Letter of Jude once refers to “the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 17), but without specifying who is meant.
o Paul – often calls himself an “apostle” of Jesus, esp. in beginning his letters (Rom 1:1; 1 Cor 1:1; 2 Cor 1:1; Gal 1:1; Eph 1:1; etc), or when stressing his equal status with the other apostles (Rom 11:13; 1 Cor 9:1-5; 15:7-10; 2 Cor 12:12; Gal 1:17-19).
o Apollos – never individually called an “apostle,” but clearly included when Paul refers to “us apostles” (1 Cor 4:9; cf. 1:12; 3:4—4:6)

Quite simply, prayer is talking to God. Prayer is a natural expression of our relationship with God. Jesus teaches his followers to pray to God as our Father, simply and directly, trusting God to answer our prayers in the way that is best for us. We do not need anyone to stand between us and God – we have direct access to God as we pray. Its God’s gift, a covenant and a means of communion with God.

2. Types of prayer

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Prayer of thanksgiving

3.Why do we complain of not being heard in prayer?
St. james 4:3 says “ you ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions” our father knows what we need before we ask him”(Mt.6:8)but he awaits our petition because the dignity of his children lies in their freedom.

4. What is the greatest and perfect prayer taught by Jesus himself?
The Our father. It says God’s majesty and presence is in heaven, which is our homeland. We are citizens of it. HIs name is sanctified, and Christ’s second coming. He is our Jehovah Jirah and our provider. He will bless us with wisdom to have discernment of good and bad.

5 . How should we pray?
Jesus warns against hypocrisy in prayer – that is, when we try to impress others with our prayers. Also, we don’t pray with the aim of pressuring God to give us what we want. We must pray in faith that we have received the grace.
Different ways are praying are:
We can pray with our thoughts: thinking about God and how good he is and how wonderful are the gifts He has given to us.
We can pray with our words: talking to God and telling Him about our problems and difficulties our joys and happiness.
We can pray with our actions and the things we do
We can pray standing up ,sitting down kneeling or even walking.
5. Who inspires us to pray
 The Holy Spirit who teaches the Church and recalls to her all that Jesus said also instructs her in the life of prayer, inspiring new expressions of the same basic forms of prayer: blessing, petition, intercession, thanksgiving, and praise.
 Because God blesses the human heart, it can in return bless him who is the source of every blessing.

Knowledge of faith

Rev. 22:4 – “And there shall be no curse any more, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall serve him. And they shall see his face: and his name shall be on their foreheads.”

Matt. 5:8 – “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

I John 3:2 – “Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”

Revelation 21:1-2 describes this: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” The very tabernacle of God will be with humans then and heaven is any place where God is (Rev. 21:3). All pain, suffering, and tears will absent there (Rev. 21:4).
